Fuggi Fuggi – the Italian version of the board game known as Fearsome Floors in English – is a strategy game where every player moves a group of characters in the desperate attempt to help them escape a dungeon before a fearsome monster catches and eats them!
In July 2016 we took on the adventure of translating this fun board game created by Friedemann Friese and distributed in Italy by Giochi Uniti. Giochi Uniti.
The game is composed of a large board, which represents the dungeon. There are also three modular monsters, eight stones and seven teams of wannabe survivors, who include the Addams family and a team of priests!
The first player to lead three of their team safely out of the dungeon is the winner!!
Fuggi Fuggi is a strategy game; once you have read the rules you can start playing, concentrating only on planning and moves. For this reason, it was essential to focus on the translation of the rules to ensure that they were clear, consistent and comprehensible to everyone. Fuggi Fuggi is, indeed, suitable for children ten and up.
One last curiosity…
Author Friedemann Friese does not hide his passion for the letter F, which is everywhere including the title (Finstere Flure in the original German)… Translating the game was fun, but the real challenge was localising the back of the box while indulging the author’s whims! Here is an example from the English version
“Now you must flee Fieso’s trap. Furunkulus, the monster, is a frightening freak, especially fond of foolish foreigners. He will feed on you if he is able. So you want to fool Furunkulus and flee to freedom.”
